Here are some tips on how to stay warmer in winter.

What to Wear

Wearing the right clothes can make all the difference. Dressing appropriately for the weather is important if you want to keep the cold at bay. Layering is always a good idea. That way if it gets too hot you can remove one layer without your body temperature suffering.

You can also buy base layers in most stores which are great for keeping your core warm without adding bulk. Don't forget to add hats, scarves, and gloves too! Winter boots come in all shapes and sizes. Fur-lined or thermal, they will help keep your feet warm and make winter walks far more enjoyable!

Heating Your Home

There are various things you can do to make your home warmer and retain optimum heat.
Some older properties don’t have cavity wall insulation. Whilst this can be costly, it can be done retrospectively so it may be worth looking into if your home is particularly chilly.

It is all well and good creating heat, but what if your house isn’t retaining it as well as it should be? Having your roof inspected by a residential roofer once or twice a year is a great idea. Heat rises upwards and if there are any missing slates or tiles, or even gaps in your roof, the heat will escape. Before winter sets in, its good to know that your roof is on top form.

As central heating boilers age, their performance declines. If your boiler is old it may not be working to its full potential. It’s therefore worthwhile getting a qualified engineer to service it regularly. Fully replacing it may also be of benefit. The amount you save in heating bills can mount up very quickly and save more money than your initial outlay for a new one.

If you have a smart meter you can track your usage. Some suggest it is cheaper keeping your heating at a regular temperature rather than turning it on and off as needed.

Home Comforts

There is nothing nicer on a cold winters day than snuggling up on the sofa in a cozy, inviting room. Curtains are not only aesthetically pleasing but play a huge role in room temperature. There are various curtains and window dressings available. One of the best for retaining heat are thermal lined. They can be a little more costly but are worth it.

Throws and cushions will also provide you with added warmth when needed. Sometimes the way a room looks can make it look and feel warmer even if it is not. Lighting candles or adding soft lighting creates atmosphere and the illusion of warmth. If you have an open fire or wood-burning stove, these can be a cheaper option to heating the whole house and they look beautiful too.

Heat can escape through the gaps in your doors. Popping some draft excluders at the bottom of each door will minimize this.

If you are feeling cold before retiring the night, put a hot water bottle in your bed an hour in advance. When you get into bed you will be so appreciative of the extra warmth! Electric Blankets are also a lovely idea for a cozy bed.

You Are What You Eat

Eating hearty and wholesome foods is a great idea in winter. There are thousands of recipes for stews and soups available online. They will not only fill you up but make you feel warmer. Eating a balanced and healthy diet will also create good blood circulation.

Stay Active

You will feel colder if you are sitting down or staying still. If you are feeling particularly cold, getting up and moving around even for ten minutes will make a difference. Whetherit’s just doing a spot of cleaning or hanging some laundry, it should warm you up.

Going for a nice winter’s day walk with the family is always nice even if it's cold outside. If you wear the right clothing it’s a lovely way to spend your time. Exercise like running is also good to keep you warm. You may feel a bit cold during your warm-up but once you get going you won't even notice!
